Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research 2024

FF-NY Canucks & Friends

We're raising money for the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research in New York City!

The Terry Fox Run has raised more than $850 million since 1980. Before his death on June 28, 1981, Terry had achieved his once unimaginable goal of $1 from every Canadian. More importantly, he had set in motion the framework for an event, The Terry Fox Run, that would ignite cancer research in Canada, and around the world. The annual Terry Fox Run is held in over 60 countries around the world.

Terry Fox's Story

18-year old Terry Fox of Vancouver was diagnosied with cancer (osteogenic sarcoma) just above the knee, the subsequent amputation of his leg and experience in the cancer wards inspired him to start the Marathon of Hope.

Terry Fox began the Marathon of Hope in April 1980 to raise Cancer awareness with the goal of running across Canada from East to West. He began the run by dipping his right leg (prosthetic) in the Atlantic Ocean off St. John's, Newfoundland, and filled two bottles of ocean water with the intention of emptying one bottle in the Pacific Ocean.

He would run 5,300 kilometers (3,339 miles) over 143 days, nearly a marathon a day, before cancer returned forcing Terry to stop running on September 1, 1980. Terry died on June 28, 1981, knowing that there would be an annual run in his name that reflected his values and vision. He’d run through six provinces and was two-thirds of the way home.

100% of every dollar you give supports new research directed by Dr. Renier Brentjens at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Dr. Brentjens’ lab focuses on immunotherapy research to treat acute and chronic leukemias.

"No matter how promising the research or how inspired the scientists, nothing can happen without the resources to fund the work. We now have many reasons to feel hopeful about using T cells in the treatment of many kinds of cancer, and we wouldn't be where we are without the support from organizations like The Terry Fox Run." ~ Dr. Renier Brentjens
